Phony Express: Remaking the Three Stooges

When I first heard about the Farrelly Brothers Three Stooges adaptation I was somewhat intrigued. I am a big fan of the original Stooges, they always made me laugh which I really think is something considering it has been 70 years (give or take) since some of them were released. But then the inevitable casting rumors started circulating…. Johnny Depp… Paul Giamatti… Sean Penn… Jim Carrey…Benicio Del Toro. I started to feel less intrigued, and a little more disappointed. I can’t help but think that any attempt will come off as a cheap knock-off of the original. And with MGM’s bankruptcy troubles of late, it seemed that this project may end up falling by the wayside.

However, recently 20th Century Fox bought the rights and it seems as though it will be making some progress.  The Wrap is now reporting that the Farrelly’s have a new list of potential Stooges. They are thinking “Jackass” alum Johnny Knoxville, “Saturday Night Live” favorite Andy Samberg and Australian comic Shane Jacobson to play Moe, Larry and Curly respectively.

To be honest, although I am still skeptical, these new casting rumors have me heading back towards being intrigued. Knoxville and Samberg are both pretty funny, and although I am not at all familiar with Shane Jacobson, but based solely on looks I could definitely see him as Curly. What do you think? For or against the remake? Who would you cast?

I am intrigued, but skeptical. I don’t know that anything could be as funny as the originals and not look ripped off…but I’ll give it a chance!
